Should You Write From Home?

Hi, this is Jesse from Startcopywriting.com and in this post I’m going to answer the basic question you might have asked yourself which is… “Should you write from home?” I’m also going to cover some of the most productive places that I go to get lots of writing done while avoiding common distractions and temptations.

Should You Write From Home?

Every time I tell people I can write from anywhere, they ask if I’m able to write from home. They don’t believe they could work from home. They imagine it would be too distracting and they simply wouldn’t achieve much when writing from home. Well, I tend to agree with them, and I’ve been working from home for years. There are a lot of distractions and temptations when you write from home. It’s very hard to focus when the phone is ringing, the TV’s playing and all the other things that go on at home. It’s even more distracting if you have small children.

Best Places To Get Some Writing Done

What are the best places and environments for getting some writing done? Let me share with you some ideal places (outside of home) that I’ve tried over the years.

1. Coffee Shop

I love coffee and writing from coffee shops! The smell of roasting coffee beans, the jazz music playing through a speaker, and the social vibes. But should you write from one? My personal opinion is that if it’s a quiet coffee shop, there isn’t too many people, noise and other distractions, then yes, write from a cafe. It can be a fun environment to get some writing done, if you choose the right cafe!

2. Shared Office

Another place I’ve tried writing from are shared offices and coworking spaces. Over the years, I’ve worked from a shared office and I’ve been very productive because when you look around, you see everybody else working as well. And a productive environment can inspire you to be productive as well. Unfortunately, shared offices can be quite expensive especially if you’re looking for one in a central location within the city. In fact, one of the reasons I moved to Thailand in 2016 was because of the digital nomad community and abundance of co-working spaces. 3. Library The next place I seem to get a lot of writing done is from the Library. For many years I’ve worked from the library and have done some of my best work there. I believe the reason why is that you’re in an environment where everybody is studying. You’ve got author\’s writing their books, students writing their assignments, everybody else is writing something and you certainly get in the mood to write yourself! You’re less likely to lounge around or watch a DVD in the library and less likely to make phone calls because the library has a strict no-talking policy. The library can be a fantastic, and free environment that’s very conducive for writing. So if you’re just getting started and don’t have a budget for a coworking space, I would highly recommend that you look into your local library and see if you can get some writing done there.
