01:25 How To Get Copywriting Experience, The Most Effective Way
Hey, this is Jesse from StartCopywriting.com and in this video I\’m going to be answering the common question \”How do I get copywriting experience?\”
So today I\’m coming to you live from Venice Beach, California and the reason I\’m wearing these sunglasses is because if I don\’t, my face is going to look like this because it is so bright, it is so hot and sunny out here in Venice today that there’s not much I could do about it.
The Freedom Of Being A Copywriter
Before I begin, I want to explain something, a lot of people here are obviously not American or Australian, a lot of people are asking me “Oh, you on holidays or are you working here?” And my answer to that is well, both because a s a copywriter, you have that freedom to work overseas, you have the freedom to make money really from anywhere, from your laptop as long as you have that, well then you can be in business, and that’s what I’m doing! So, that’s just another great reason to start your copywriting business and if you haven’t checked it out already, definitely go over to my website StartCopywriting.com, there are lots of free training videos like this one.How To Get Copywriting Experience, The Most Effective Way
Alright, so how do you get experience as a copywriter? It really is a catch-22 because companies won’t hire you unless you have experience but if you don’t have that experience already then how do you get hired? So, the simple answer is the way you get experience is to work for free. And I recommend to work for friends who have businesses or who are entrepreneurs or start ups, work for them for free, write for free in exchange for a testimonial and in exchange to use the work that you produced in your own portfolio. So you’re getting two things out of that, you’re not getting paid, you’re not earning money but because you are a beginner, that’s okay cause what you really need at the beginning stage is you need testimonial to show that you\’ve done this before and that other people like your work and you also need samples that you can show potential clients in the future. You’d be very surprised at how many people either want copywriting done for them or that they know someone who is looking for a copywriter and you never know. When I first started this, when I actually wanted to get feedback and I wanted to get some samples, I wrote for free by simply posting an ad on a online discussion forum so it’s another thing you can do, you can find internet marketing discussion forums that are on the internet or you can find business or entrepreneur or even start up discussion forums and you post that request on them and then people will contact you, they’ll send you private messages and then you can do that exchange of writing for free in exchange for a sample and for a testimonial. That’s what I did and I wrote a sales letter and that sales letter did very well, I was lucky on my first attempt to just get it all right and the great side benefit that happened, this was unexpected was later down the line, about 6 months to a year later, that client who I write for free then actually hired me to update and rewrite that same copy a year later and I charged him for that and earned a decent income. So, that’s what I recommend you do, you got to get yourself out there if you want experience, you have to offer to work for free and maybe do some smaller jobs as opposed to some long job that’s going to take you several months to write, you might want to write something smaller to begin with just to get started and to quickly build your portfolio.
