How To Become A Freelance Writer And Earn A Great Living Working A Few Hours A Day
From home or anywhere else in the world
career even if you have no previous experience
Do you love
to write?
Do you want to turn your passion for writing into a successful freelance writing career?
How would you like to earn $25 to $100 per hour writing about topics you’re already knowledgeable about?
What if you could write for a few hours a day from home, the beach, a café, or anywhere else in the world?
But if you’re like most aspiring writers, you’re worried that you don’t have the necessary experience or skills to become a freelance writer.
Why you’re struggling to become a freelance writer
- You don't want to compete with thousands of freelancers for low-paying writing gigs on Upwork or Fiverr.
- You're worried that clients won't hire you because you don't have paid writing experience, a portfolio, or a journalism degree.
- You don't know what to charge, how to find well-paying clients, or how to pitch your services.
- You’re sick and tired of working a 9 to 5 job and dream of being your own boss and working your own hours from home.
- You’ve already read tons of articles about freelance writing but you feel more lost and confused than when you started.
I know how you feel. In fact, I’ve been exactly where you are.
How almost failing English in high school helped me become a successful freelance writer
I have a confession to make.
I never went to University. I don’t have a journalism degree. And I almost failed English in high school.
In my first year of primary school, after my teacher noticed me struggling to read and write the alphabet, I was diagnosed with mild Dyslexia.
I barely passed my high school English exam and was not able to attend university to pursue a journalism degree.
With no qualifications, I worked many low-end jobs. I slogged it out as a fruit shop attendant, supermarket shelf packer, restaurant dishwasher and telemarketer before eventually landing a commission-only sales job.
One night, working in the sales office, I started to peruse the bookshelf and discovered several books on freelance writing.
I absolutely loved the idea of writing for a living, and literally devoured every book I could find on the topic.
After months of reading and studying, I reached out to a very successful writer who agreed to mentor me. I started my freelance writing business from home and within one month, I landed my first paying client.
That was 20 years ago and I’ve never looked back!
If I can do it, you can too.
You can make a real living writing
from anywhere in the world
Are you ready to combine your passion for writing with the freedom of travel? Many freelancers have made this dream a reality, and you can too.
As a freelance writer, you can work from anywhere in the world, allowing you to experience new cultures and explore different places.
In 2016 I packed my bags and decided to travel the world as a location-independent freelance writer.
I’ve worked from a beachside hammock in Thailand, a cafe overlooking the rice fields in Bali, and the cobblestone streets of Medellin, Colombia.
These cities offer thriving communities of freelancers from all over the world and great opportunities to network and grow your business. I’ve made lifelong friends with many digital nomads I’ve met along the way.
Join the $1.2 trillion
freelance economy
The freelance writing industry has seen significant growth in recent years, and the ongoing pandemic has only accelerated this trend.
In 2020, the global freelance platforms market grew to $3.39 billion. Last year, annual earnings by US freelancers grew by $100 million (source Absolute Reports). Forbes recently reported that freelancers contributed $1.2 trillion to the economy during the covid 19 pandemic.
Many companies and organizations have had to pivot to remote work and are looking for ways to continue producing high-quality content. As a result, they are turning to freelance writers to help meet their content needs.
The demand for high-quality writing services is only expected to grow as more businesses realise the value of good content. 81% of businesses view content as a core business strategy (source content marketing institute).
If you are stuck in a boring job and want to earn a living from your words, now is the perfect time to take the leap and start your freelance writing career.

Freelance Writing 101
If you’re just starting out as a freelance writer, this module is for you. I’ve compiled answers to the most commonly asked questions by new writers so you can hit the ground running and start building your freelance writing career.
- What is freelance writing?
- What are the different types of freelance writers?
- Who hires freelance writers and why?
- What problems do freelance writers solve?
You’ll also get access to my research guide, which covers the 5 most in-demand and profitable types of freelance writing. From $26 to $150 per hour, you’ll learn what these types of jobs pay and what they entail, so you can start working on projects that are both fulfilling and lucrative.
MODULE 1:
How to Choose A Profitable Writing Niche
Writing for all niches may seem like a good idea at first, but it can actually be detrimental to your career. Let me explain why.
By specializing in one niche, you can become an expert in your field and gain a reputation as THE go-to writer in your chosen niche. You can also choose a niche that you’re already knowledgeable about, which means you are more likely to enjoy your work and stay motivated in the long term.
In this video, you’ll discover:
- The 10 most profitable writing niches revealed
- How to choose the best writing niche for you (3 questions to ask)
- My writing niches and why I chose to specialize in them
- Examples of 4 different niche writers and their websites
You’ll also get my brand new guide which explores the 10 most profitable writing niches, the different pay ranges for hourly and per project, types of jobs, and even more lucrative sub-niches inside the bigger niches.
MODULE 2:
How To Build A Portfolio (Without Clients)
As a freelance writer, it’s important to build a portfolio with relevant niche examples to showcase your skills and experience to potential clients. A portfolio allows you to demonstrate your expertise in a particular niche and provides clients with solid examples of your writing abilities.
- 4 methods for building a portfolio (even if you don’t have clients yet)
- Where to publish your portfolio online (the 3 places I recommend)
- Great freelance writing portfolios to inspire your own
- Portfolio mistakes writers make that turn off potential clients
- Why building a portfolio is a fast way to gain testimonials and clients
You’ll also get my brand new guide which explores the 10 most profitable writing niches, the different pay ranges for hourly and per project, types of jobs, and even more lucrative sub-niches inside the bigger niches.
MODULE 3:
How To Build A Freelance Website That Sells
MODULE 4:
How To Set Your Writing Rates
How much should you charge? If you’re brand new to freelance writing, it can be challenging to figure out exactly what to charge for your services.
Or, if you’ve already worked with low-paying clients, you may be ready to stop working for peanuts and finally charge what you’re worth.
With so many articles and blogs offering conflicting advice, it’s no wonder you’re confused. But don’t worry, help and clarity are on the way.
In this module, you’ll learn:
- The 5 different types of writing and what they earn per hour
- What to charge if you are a beginner just starting out
- Should you charge per hour, per word or per project?
- The 5 different factors that determine what you can charge
- A proven formula for quoting clients and winning more jobs
MODULE 5:
How To Find And Land High-Paying Clients With 5 Step-By-Step Strategies That Work in 2023
If you’re like many freelance writers, then you’re naturally introverted and don’t love the idea of having to sell your writing services.
You may have a negative belief about sales and not want to be a pushy salesperson. However, learning how to effectively market and sell your services is essential for a successful freelance writing career.
As a freelance copywriter for over 20 years, I have personally tried lots of different client-getting strategies. Many were a waste of time or just did not work long-term.
In the Freelance Writers Blueprint, you’ll discover the 5 strategies that I’ve personally used to attract high-paying clients long term.
Your existing network
- Learn how to identify people from your existing network who could be potential clients or referral partners.
- Copy and paste my word-for-word templates you can use to promote your writing services via email and social media.
- Download my handy lead tracking spreadsheet to keep track of whom you need to follow up with and when.
Cold Emailing
Cold emailing can be a powerful way to generate leads and clients for your freelance writing business. Not to be confused with spam, it’s a legitimate way of reaching out to potential clients and introducing them to your services.
In fact, cold emailing is similar to business-to-business (B2B) communication, where you are simply introducing yourself and your services to potential clients who may require your writing services.
- Learn 5 expert tips for writing effective cold emails
- Discover the 5 key elements of a successful cold email
- Watch me analyze common mistakes in cold emails and show you how to avoid them
- Get access to a free CRM to easily manage your leads and automate your follow-up emails
You’ll also gain access to my Cold Email Campaign Template. This campaign has proven to be successful, achieving an impressive 80% open rate and a 6% reply rate from the businesses I contacted.
And while you may not achieve the same results as there are many variables with any campaign, you can copy and paste my campaign and use it to generate leads for your business.
Job Boards
With hundreds of new writing jobs being posted every day, job boards are a goldmine opportunity for freelance writers looking for clients.
But job boards can be competitive, with many writers applying for the same jobs, so how do you stand out from the crowd and land the best gigs?
With the right knowledge and approach, you can increase your chances of success on job boards and attract more high-paying writing gigs.
- Discover the top 10 job boards for freelance writers
- Learn how to write an effective pitch that stands out
- Avoid common pitfalls and mistakes with our pitch do's and don'ts
- See examples of good and bad pitches to learn what works and what doesn't
You’ll also get access to my guide where I share the 10 best job boards for freelance writers and how to craft compelling pitches that will get you noticed by clients.
Online Communities
Online communities, like Facebook Groups, are a fantastic way to network with potential clients from the comfort of your own home. However, with thousands of different online groups to choose from, it can be overwhelming to know which ones to join.
In this module, you’ll learn:
- The only 2 types of groups you should join (and why you should avoid everything else)
- A simple Google search for finding lots of great communities
- My two-step criteria for selecting the right groups to join
- The 6 different types of posts that generate leads and clients
- How I landed a $4,500 writing gig from an AMA post in just one hour
Networking Events
If you’re an introvert, you may be hesitant to attend in-person events like business seminars and conferences. However, these types of events can actually be a great way to network and meet potential clients.
You can have real conversations and build relationships with people in a way that is not possible through a screen. These face-to-face interactions and connections are often more impactful than online interactions.
I’ve personally generated tens of thousands of dollars from clients whom I met at in-person events and seminars.
In this module, you’ll:
- Discover which events you should attend to maximize your networking opportunities
- Explore the pros and cons of free and paid events
- A simple way to find the must-attend industry events in your field
- Get tips on what to do before, during, and after the event to make the most of your experience
- Learn icebreakers and conversational tips for introverts to make networking more comfortable
- Discover how to follow up with people after the event to turn connections into potential clients.
You’ll also get access to my guide where I share the 10 best job boards for freelance writers and how to craft compelling pitches that will get you noticed by clients.
MODULE 6:
Working With Clients
If you can build strong working relationships with your clients, they are more likely to hire you again, refer you to other potential clients, and provide positive testimonials.
If you don’t know how to communicate and work with clients effectively, you run the risk of losing them or receiving a negative review. This can damage your reputation and make it harder to find new clients.
In this module, you’ll:
- Discover the 4 things that clients value the most but will never tell you
- Learn about the five deal breakers you should never stand for when working with clients
- Follow my 6-step process to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for both you and your clients
Plus 4 workbooks and templates to help you
grow your freelance writing business

Excellent course! I finished feeling far more knowledgeable about each of the elements of freelance writing covered and more confident and motivated to get out there and start writing & marketing myself. I found the way the course is structured made it easy to understand each aspect covered, and how they relate to one another. Clear, delineated steps, easy to follow and plenty of valuable resources and reference material I’m sure I’ll be using for a long time to come. This course was the perfect next step following on from the first course you created, Jesse. Keep the lessons coming, you’re a great teacher and your passion for writing really shines through! Clear, concise, interesting, engaging and enthusiastic. Bravo!

Thank you, Jesse, for the great classes full of information that you have offered: the techniques that can be applied well, your own story of how you have come to this position, which helped the beginners or anyone who was not confident enough in this career. I have always enjoyed your teaching.

I’ve been freelance writing for seven years, primarily by being a content writer in the supplements, nutrition, and health niche. I entered this lesson thinking I knew most of the stuff, but when the marketing and networking part started, that’s when I knew I didn’t know everything. I discovered a few gems today, and I hope you do too.
