Hi, this is Jesse from StartCopywriting.com and in today’s video, I’m going to talk about 5 Tips for Overcoming Writer’s Block. Get ready to learn about the dreaded writer’s block and how you can overcome it.
If you’re not clear with what you’re writing or if you’re confused about what you’re trying to write, it’s not going to be very easy for you. What I like to do is to come up with an outline or have a really strong, clear idea of what I’m writing before I actually sit down and write.
The goal is to do nothing but write for a set period of minutes. It gives you a mini deadline to focus on and by doing this, you’re really able to get in “the zone” and avoid distractions.
It’s a great strategy for getting lots of writing done and writing for short bursts makes you a very productive writer.
So what you want to do is to turn off your phone (or put it on silent) and turn off the internet. You want to close the doors so people don’t come in and interrupt you, and find a quiet place where you can get some writing done.
By doing these things, you’ll find yourself more productive with your writing and avoid writer’s block because you won’t be getting continually sidetracked and distracted.
I hope you’ve enjoyed my 5 Tips for Overcoming Writer’s Block. If you’d like to watch more videos like this one, I have a whole bunch of them over at my website or in my Youtube channel.
And if you have your own tips in overcoming the dreaded writer’s block, I’d love to hear them! Feel free to post them in the comment section below.
Tip #1: Get Clear On What You’re Writing
So tip #1 for overcoming writer’s block is to get clear on what you’re writing before you sit down and write. A lack of clarity or being confused about what you’re actually writing, often means ending up with writer’s block.
Tip #2: Stop Perfectionism
Too many people are perfectionists when they start writing and what that means is having unrealistic and unachievable standards for yourself that you are unlikely to achieve. For copywriters what that means is sitting down and expecting everything you write is going to be amazing. We beat ourselves up over it. Stop being a perfectionist and realize that progress with your writing is more important than getting it right the first time.Tip #3: Write Without Editing
Too many people sit down and write, write a sentence, then decide that it’s no good. They delete the whole thing by hitting backspace. They write, delete, write, delete – and end up with nothing. Here’s a better way. Sit down and write the first draft without editing. Don’t edit while you write. You can always come back and edit your first draft later.Tip #4: Use A Stop Timer
You could use an old-school egg timer or a timer on your phone. Basically, you want to set a countdown timer for 15 to 30 minutes. Then do nothing but focus on writing until your timer hits zero.
Tip #5: Avoid Distractions And Interruptions
If you’re writing from home, you might have family or friends coming over trying to talk to you and interrupting your pace. Or you might have distractions like email alerts, your phone, facebook, or the internet. All these distractions can derail our writing and pull us out of the flow when we could be writing some great copy.
