Hi! This is Jesse from StartCopywriting.com and in today’s video; I’m going to tell you all about how you can become a copywriter. So in this episode of StartCopywriting.com, I’m going to share with you my own personal journey of how I went from being totally unknown, complete beginner to becoming a highly paid copywriter.

5 Simple Steps To Become A Copywriter

So, there are 5 simple steps that you need to follow if you want to become a copywriter.

Step 1: Study Copywriting

Step number 1 is you want to study copywriting. You can’t really become the master of anything unless you actually study what is it that you’re doing. So read lots of books on copywriting, you also want to check out my website, I have loads of free videos and resources that are going to train you into becoming a copywriter as well. So, that’s step number 1: Study Copywriting.

Step 2: Practise Writing Every Day

Step number 2 is you need to practise writing every day. Now, you don’t need to spend hours and hours writing in the beginning, you may work at a job right now and not have a lot of time. What I recommend is just 10-15 minutes a day practise writing. No one learned how to ride a bike by reading books on riding a bike, you have to actually go out there and do it and that’s what practising writing will do for you. So if you spend just 10-15 minutes a day writing out winning or successful ads by hand, that’s going to help you internalize the process of copywriting. You’ll even pick up some of the techniques of copywriting just by writing out some of the existing ads that you find either on the internet or in printed media.

Step 3: Build Your Portfolio

Step number 3 is to build your portfolio. Nobody is going to take you seriously as a copywriter if you don’t have any work to show them what you’re capable of. So the way you build your portfolio, there are really 2 ways: The first way is to write for friends for free. By doing that, you are going to get an example that you can now use on your website in your portfolio. And there’s no pressure to perform and create blockbuster results because you’re writing for a friend and you are not getting paid to write that example. Another way is you can just start writing ads. Now, what I mean by that is you can take existing product or services, it might be the local hairdressing salon, it might be a restaurant, and you can write an ad for that restaurant or that hair salon and then you can use that in your marketing. Now, of course you don’t want to say that you actually were hired to write that copy, it’s just an example of what you’re capable of.

Step 4: Build Your Website

Step number 4 is build your website. The way the internet is going nowadays, you need a website if you’re going to attract global clients. So having a website really is a must. The good news is with all the advancements in technology, it’s so much easier nowadays to create a website than it was when I first started copywriting 10 years ago. So definitely build that website and have your portfolio examples and your contact details on your website.

Step 5: Go Out There And Get Clients

Step numbers 5 is go out there and get clients. There are so many ways to get copywriting clients. Some of the best ways are in another video I have over at StartCopywriting.com but I’ll give you one of my favourite ways right now and that is to attend and network at business seminars and events. Business owners are people that are most likely to hire you as a copywriter so you want to go and meet those people by shaking hands and handing out business cards at any of your local chamber of commerce or business events.
