How To Get Your First Copywriting Job

Hi, it’s Jesse from StartCopywriting.com and in this episode I’m going to be talking about how you can get your first your copywriting job by telling you how I was able to get my first 3 copywriting jobs.

So 10 years ago, I was a new copywriter, I had no experience, I’d never been hired to write for anybody. I had no business contacts and no website but I was able to use the strategies I’m about to tell you to get my first 3 paying copywriting clients.

Strategy 1: Attend A Network At Business Seminars

Strategy number 1 is attend and network at business seminars. So I attended a business seminar and I was really quite terrified of meeting new people. I didn’t really know how to network but I was able to go up to and meet a couple of new people. As a result, I picked up my first paying client. Now, I’d recommend if you’re going to seminars, try to go to seminars that lasts a couple of days, and have some kind of fee to attend. I find that free seminars are not so great because you get people who aren’t really qualified or may not spend money on copywriting. Business seminars, when you have to pay to attend and are couple of days long, give you more of an opportunity to get your first few clients.

Strategy 2: Network Online

Strategy number 2 to get your first few copywriting clients is to network online. So I’m talking about networking on …

– Facebook groups – Online forums – LinkedIn forums

… are all great strategies to meet potential clients who might hire you.

When I first started, I joined a copywriting forum. I used that forum to network and meet other copywriters. One of them was generous enough to send me a couple of copywriting jobs in my first year and I was forever grateful to him. You need to be visible; you need to put yourself out there if you’re going to meet other copywriters who might send you work.

Strategy 3: Your Local Newspaper

Strategy number 3 is your local newspaper. Pick up your local newspaper and look for ads that you can improve. You might see a few things they’re doing wrong. Call the business, ask to speak to the owner and offer to rewrite their advertising for free. You’ll be amazed at how many business owners would love some help with their advertising.
