How To Become A Better Copywriter

Hey it’s Jesse and in this video I’m going to answer the common question “How do I get good at copywriting?” and I’m going to explain to you what I did at the beginning of my career to get good at copywriting. Let’s do it!

So today I’m coming to you live from Venice Beach California. And it is so hot and bright and sunny out today that I’ve been forced to wear sunglasses for the video otherwise, my eyes are going to look like this.

Freedom Of Mobility

Now before I begin and tell you how you can get good at copywriting and increase and improve your copywriting abilities and skill. I want to explain that the reason I’m in Venice Beach today is because I’m travelling. And people ask me, when they hear the Australian accent  “Oh are you working or are you on holidays?”

Well, the real answer is both because as a copywriter you have the freedom of mobility. You’re able to live in other parts of the world as long as you have work coming in, clients that are paying you. You can travel and you can work. So I spend some of my days in the little apartment that I’m renting just off the boardwalk here in Venice Beach. I spend some of my time each day writing and working for clients and then the rest of the day I can come out and enjoy the beautiful sights and sounds and people here in Venice Beach.

It’s truly a fantastic profession and I think that’s why you want to get into copywriting so that you too, can have these experiences.

Ways On How To Become A Better Copywriter

So how do you get good at copywriting? Well, one way is to read lots and lots of books and articles and listen to different mentors out there about how to write copy, how to become a copywriter, that’s one way to do it. And that will fill your head with lots of knowledge on how to write copy. You might understand how to write copy but the way you get good is through daily practise. You need to practise writing every day.

Practise Writing Everyday

Now, when I began my copywriting career what I did was I read all the books, I got really excited about this new profession and I did nothing, right? I did nothing for about a month then I realized that when I sat down to write, it was difficult. So what I did was I started practising writing every day. This is something that’s recommended by some of the best copywriter from the world, it’s also a technique that\’s recommended by authors and famous writers out there.

They recommend that you do daily writing and through daily writing you’re continually sharpening the sword, you\’re staying relevant. It’s true that through consistency and frequency of writing you actually become a writer, not just reading about writing or thinking about writing or just reading books about writing. You need to actually do it.

Its the same as if you’re learning an instrument. You could read all the books on how to play the guitar, you could listen to people playing the guitar, you could even go to concerts and look at people playing the guitar but unless you’re practising frequently and consistently then you’re not going to actually learn the guitar. And it’s the same as writing; it’s the same with any profession, skill or even learning a language. It’s that daily practise, that daily frequency that is actually going to get you improving and increasing your copywriting skills.

So I recommend every day find 15 minutes, just 15 minutes every single day to sit down and write copy with a pen and a pad or write it with your computer if you need to but find that 15 minutes and write copy. Now, what are you going to write? Well, what I recommend to my students who I mentor in my mentoring program, I recommend that they transcribe successful advertising or successful sales material that they transcribe either with a pen and a pad and by hand or they do it with their computer and they do that every day.

They simply transcribe and write down the copy that is already proven to work and to be successful, that is what you’re going to be writing. So find ads that you like, find ads that have already been successful and basically write them out by hand or with your laptop every single day, just 15 minutes a day and you’ll find slowly but surely, your skills will increase just that little bit every single day and in a few months time, you’ll be a much better writer. You\’ll be a much better copywriter than you are today.

So that’s my tip for you today. Now I\’m going to join the people back at the boardwalk and if you want more videos like this, definitely head over to my website StartCopywriting.com and I’ll see you in the next video.
